T.R. Disaster and Emergency Management - AFAD

The 20th Aydın Doğan Award was given to AFAD, T.R. Disaster and Emergency Management

The ‘Aydın Doğan Award’ given in the name of Aydın Doğan, the initiator of the Foundation, with the purpose of enhancing humanitarian values in our country, was given to AFAD, T.R. Disaster and Emergency Management, in the 20th year of the Foundation, with the unanimous resolution of the Board of Directors.

The Aydın Doğan Award, which recognizes the achievements of individuals and entities who have received appraisal on national and international platforms, and works in the areas of culture, the arts, literature, and sciences, has stepped outside the boundaries of its traditional categories this year to draw attention to an important matter, and to award the efforts carried out in this field, and was duly given to the T.R. Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD).

AFAD’s award was delivered at a ceremony held at the Istanbul Hilton Hotel on Wednesday, May 4, 2016.

During the opening speech, Hanzade Doğan Boyner said that, “As the Aydın Doğan Foundation, we wanted to give the Aydın Doğan Award to an entity that promotes humanitarian values, and therefore we selected the Prime Ministry Emergency and Disaster Management. Unfortunately what underlies this choice is an immense humanitarian tragedy. The civil war in Syria that has been ongoing for several years now has displaced almost half of the country’s population. Faced with this tragedy, Turkey opened her doors to almost 3 million Syrians, with a brave heart, and provided them with food and shelter with her own means, without any significant support. Currently, 270 thousand of those refugees are continuing their lives at the accommodation shelters built and managed by AFAD in 10 cities. To such a backdrop, AFAD drew all attention for its organizational accomplishments, and effective skills in providing humanitarian services. One of our objectives is to draw the attention of both our country and international public to these accomplishments of AFAD. I wholeheartedly congratulate AFAD, the recipient of the 2016 Aydın Doğan Award, its esteemed Chairman Dr. Fuat Oktay, and his co-workers, and I wish them continued success.”

Receiving the award on behalf of AFAD, Chairman Dr. Fuat Oktay expressed in his speech that even though AFAD was founded 5 years ago, it has acquired significant experience both nationally and internationally, and shared information on its projects and activities. Oktay said that, “As Turkey, even in the course of just 5 years, we have the means to have become on the best entities in the world, and even faced with the greatest of crises, we have the means to effectively overcome them; we are a country that when faced with a disaster becomes one heart and one soul,” adding, “I would like to extend my thanks to the jury members and all the decision makers for having given this award to an entity for the first time, at the 20th anniversary of Aydın Doğan Foundation, and at the same time I would like to congratulate you on your 20th anniversary.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Board of the Directors of Aydın Doğan Foundation resolved unanimously to give the Aydın Doğan Award to AFAD. It has played a significant role in carrying out the humanitarian actions of our country that has opened her arms without receiving significant external aid, and which has contributed to the welfare of millions of Syrians who have fled from 5 years of civil war of, and the oppression of its regime; it has delivered its services with an impressive organizational capability in a short period of time, demonstrating a success story that is exemplary worldwide. The Board of Directors also expressed their belief that this award would contribute to the further recognition and understanding of AFAD’s activities by the community and the rest of the world.
