He was born in İstanbul in 1969. Out of a passion for archeology, he studied at the Department of Prehistory and Archeology of İstanbul University between 1987 and 1989. When, ultimately, his passion for fashion design tipped the scales, he began studying at the Textile and Clothing Art Department of Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, graduating in 1993. During his university education, he took styling classes from Mediha Tener and psychoanalysis, postmodernism and philosophy classes from private education institutions, also participating in theatre workshops. He believes that he learnt his main textile and life-related lessons at his father’s workshops, where he worked since he was 8 years old. Indeed, Ünal prepared his first creation when he was 10 years old with the purses he sewed from the leftover fabrics at his father’s workshop.
