Archeology: Ord. Prof. Dr. Sedat Alp and Prof. Dr. Altan Çilingiroğlu
The 2003 Aydın Doğan Award was given in Archeology, and Ord. Prof. Dr. Sedat Alp and Prof. Dr. Altan Çilingiroğlu were deemed worthy of the award by taking into consideration their efforts in the field of archeology since the foundation of the republic, and of the efforts, works and accumulated contributions of all individuals within the field of archeology who have achieved internationally acknowledged success during their careers.
The selection committee for 2003’s Aydın Doğan Award included Prof. Dr. Ufuk Esin, Prof. Dr. Haluk Abbasoğlu, Özgen Acar, Oğuz Alpözen, Prof. Dr. Muhibbe Darga, Prof. Dr. Hayat Erkanal, Doğan Hızlan, Prof. Dr. Fahri Işık, Prof. Dr. Engin Özgen, Dr. Alpay Pasinli and Prof. Dr. Veli Sevin.
Ord. Prof. Dr. Sedat Alp
Ord. Prof. Dr. Sedat Alp was born in Thessaloniki in 1913. He was successful in the state exam in 1932 and studied Ancient History, Hititology and Sumerology in Germany. In 1949, he became an ordinarius professor at Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography.
Sedat Alp has registered numerous discoveries and inventions in many branches of Hititology, and has countless books published in this field in several languages. He has worked as a professor and lectured in various universities around the world. Alp acted as the director of Konya-Karahöyük excavations from 1953 till his death. He became a member of the Turkish Historical Society in 1946, working in various positions within the Society until 1983. Moreover, he was the last president of the Turkish Historical Society before it was discontinued.
Ord. Prof. Dr. Sedat Alp holds the Order of Commendatore from the President of Italy (1957), the Order of Merit from the President of Federal Germany (1972), a medal of Paris College de France (1980), the Higher Order of Merit from the President of Federal Germany (1991) and the Order of Grande Ufficiale from the President of Italy (1991). Ord. Prof. Dr. Sedat Alp passed away on 08.10.2006.
Prof. Dr. Altan Çilingiroğlu
Prof. Dr. Altan Çilingiroğlu was born in Sürmene in 1945. He is the Dean of the Faculty of Literature at Ege University and acts as the head of the Departments of Ancient History and Asia Minor Archeology at the same institution. Prof. Dr. Çilingiroğlu has assumed the role of president in various archeological excavations around Anatolia and published 16 books and 67 scientific articles in his field of expertise.
