Cartoon Oscars find their owners

The winners of the "Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition", the 33rd of which was held by Aydın Doğan Foundation this year, were awarded their prizes during the ceremony held on November 22. The 'New Lines, New Cartoonists' Cartoon and Humor Festival, which was held for the first time this year with the participation of young cartoonists from all age groups, was filled colorful moments, prior the award ceremony.

The Award Ceremony of the 33rd of the Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition, held by the Aydın Doğan Foundation every year, bringing cartoonists from all over the world together, took place at the Trump Culture and Performance Center, and was presented by Kanal D Anchorwoman Gözde Atasoy. The Aydın Doğan Foundation Deputy Honorary Chairwoman Sema Doğan, and Aydın Doğan Yalçındağ also attended the opening ceremony, and the participating individuals included Sedat Ergin, Doğan Hızlan, Fatih Çekirge, Kanat Atkaya, and Fikret Ercan from the Hürriyet Newspaper; Sinan Çakmak from Atlas Magazine; Erdoğan Aktaş, and Ferhat Boratav from CNN Turk; Süleyman Sarılar from Kanal D; Pelin Özkan from the MediaCat Magazine, and Yaman Törüner from the Milliyet Newspaper.

The first prize winner, among the 752 artists from 68 countries, with 2521 cartoons, was Marco De Angelis from Italy. The second prize winner in the competition was Brazilian 'Cau' Claudio Antonio Gomes; and the third prize was awarded to Doğan Arslan from Turkey.

Emrah Arıkan from Turkey was awarded the Special Prize given this year for the first time in the category “Empowered Girls, Empowered World” as a reflection of the Foundation's efforts on girls' education, empowerment, and gender equality.

The Jury also gave Success Awards for the following artists: Oktay Bingöl (Turkey), Vitaly Bondar (Belarus), Evzen David (Czech Republic), Hicabi Demirci (Turkey), ‘Feggo’ Felipe Galindo (USA), Rodrigo Machado da Rosa (Brazil), Raimundo Rucke Santos Souza (Brazil), Arif Sutristanto (Indonesia), Jugoslav Vlahovic (Serbia), Kürşat Zaman (Turkey), Nahid Zamani (Iran), and Zygmunt Zaradkiewicz (Poland).

The award winning cartoons will start to be exhibited at the Kadıköy Municipality Caddebostan Cultural Center, as of November 23, Wednesday.

During her opening address at the awards ceremony, Aydın Doğan Foundation Chairwoman Hanzade Doğan Boyner said, “Cartoons is a very special branch of art. Sometimes it is an art that allows us to see everyday events that we all witness, sometimes sociological changes that affect life, and disasters that sometimes hurt us, through the window that the cartoonist opens before us… In fact, cartoonists do not just draw contemporary events, and lifestyles; they contribute to cultural values, and what’s more, they give direction to the history of humanity.” Doğan Boyner wished all teachers a Happy Teacher’s Day, and had a photograph taken with the Daddy Send Me To School dorm managers and teachers who have come to Istanbul for the Training on Adolescents and Their Development Processes, held by the Foundation.

Majority members of the cartoon jury constituted by female members 

There are seven female jury members in the 11-member jury, in which artists who are renowned as cartoon authorities in our country and across the world since the first day of its inception. The president of this year’s jury is Marlene Pohle (Argentina), and the members are Ercan Akyol (Turkey), Gülse Birsel (Turkey), Assunta Toti Buratti (Italy), Latif Demirci (Turkey), Selçuk Demirel (Turkey), Yalda Hasheminezhad (Iran), Anita Kunz (Canada), Piyale Madra (Turkey), Tan Oral (Turkey), and Elena Ospina (Colombia), all authorities in the world of culture and arts.

Young cartoonists came together in the 'New Lines, New Cartoonists' Cartoon and Humor Festival

Prior to the Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition Awards Ceremony of the Aydın Doğan Foundation, this year, a fun festival was held with the attendance of young cartoonists at the Trump Culture and Performance Center between 13.00 and 18.00.

There were several activities throughout the festival such as workshops held with primary and high school students with the cooperation of Creative Children Society; chat sessions bringing renowned cartoonist and jury member Tan Oral and the award winning cartoonists of the competition this year together with college students; and animated drawing workshop with Ziya Kürküt.

Furthermore, the drawings of the faculty of fine arts and design department of Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts as well as Işık, Doğuş, Okan, Kemerburgaz, and Dumlupınar universities, and the award winning drawings of children from the Creative Children Society were displayed for visitors.

Award winning cartoons at the Caddebostan Cultural Center

After the Award Ceremony of the 33rd Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition, the award winning cartoons will be started to be displayed at the Kadıköy Municipality Caddebostan Cultural Center on November 23, Wednesday, as of 19.00. Within the scope of the exhibition, young cartoonists will meet with award winning cartoonists and draw cartoons in the workshop to be held with the cooperation of Creative Children Society. The exhibition can be visited until December 8. All cartoon enthusiasts are expected to visit the exhibition hosted by the Kadıköy Municipality, known for its support for arts.
