An İstanbul Trip for Successful Students

May 23-28, 2015

Every year, the Aydın Doğan Foundation, invites the three most successful sophomore students residing in the “Daddy, Send Me to School” dormitories to İstanbul for a week- with their teachers.

Forty-two of the most successful students staying in the 14 female dormitories built to completion by the Aydın Doğan Foundation and turned over to the Ministry of National Education, along with 14 teachers received awards at the Doğan Holding building in Üsküdar, Altunizade. Aydın Doğan, the Honorary President of Doğan Holding participated in the ceremony and beforehand, Hanzade Doğan Boyner, the President of Doğan Online chatted with the students, who individually hailed from Erzurum, Gümüşhane, Tokat, Osmaniye, Kars, Muğla, Siirt and Ağrı Doğubeyazıt, discussing their interests and presenting them with various gifts.

“It is no wonder that you are successful"
Hanzade Doğan Boyner addressed the female students present in the hall for the ceremony by saying, “While we were chatting, I asked you what you wanted. Some of you answered, ‘Desks in the bedroom, because we want to be able to study more. The study room should not be closed so early. Using the computers once a week is not enough. We should attend some concerts now and then to be socially active.’ Still, you mostly want to study hard. Therefore, it is no wonder that you are all successful.”

Scholarships for the 20 most successful students who have passed the university exam
Hanzade Doğan Boyner gave examples from her mother’s and her own life, saying, “My mother has always wished that she went to school and had a profession. She always told us, ‘You will stand on your own two feet. You will take care of yourselves, no matter what you do. You will not rely on your father’s or your husband’s money; you will be self-sufficient.’ Today, I want to give you the same advice my mother gave me.” Boyner also surprised the students by revealing that they were going to grant scholarships to the 20 most successful students who have passed the university exam.

The executives share their experiences
Hanzade Doğan Boyner later passed the microphone to the executives of Doğan Holding. Candan Fetvacı, the Executive Director of the Aydın Doğan Foundation and Yahya Üzdiyen, Chief Executive Officer of Doğan Holding were among them and together they shared their experiences with the female students, advising them on various issues.

Tablet computers, books and gift vouchers from Doğan Kitap were among the gifts
The 42 successful female students were called up to the stage in groups during the ceremony and Hanzade Doğan Boyner; Yahya Üzdiyen; Ahmet Toksoy, Board Member of Doğan Publishing Holding; Erol Çamur, Board Member of the Aydın Doğan Foundation and Candan Fetvacı, the Executive Director of the ADV presented the students with gifts, among which were tablet computers, books and gift vouchers from Doğan Kitap.

The Aydın Doğan surprise
Towards the end of the ceremony, Doğan Holding’s Honorary President Aydın Doğan arrived at the conference hall, taking an interest in the guest children and asking them individually about their stories.

“Be journalists, not newspaper owners”
Aydın Doğan with good humor advised the students on various matters, saying that, “You are living the best days of your lives. You will each have different professions. If you ask me, a person who has been a newspaper owner for 36 years, do not be newspaper or television network owners. I advise you to be good writers working for good newspapers. Be brilliant students who work for television. You will earn well and become famous. If you are the owner, you are doomed. Someone does something wrong and you are held accountable. I have ten thousand people working at my newspapers. Each of them says or writes something and I end up being held accountable. So, be journalists, not newspaper owners.”

Aydın Doğan’s words received great applause in the conference hall and the ceremony ended after a collective photo shoot.
