Prof. Dr. Doğan Kuban and Prof. Dr. Emre Kongar

The 2nd Aydın Doğan Award, which is given every year to reward individuals and institutions that have won praise in national and international platforms in various fields such as culture, art, literature, science, is given to Prof. Dr. Doğan Kuban and Prof. Dr. Emre Kongar in the field of ”Social and Human Sciences”, in the year 1998.

The Selection Committee consisting of Prof. Dr. Metin Heper, Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı, Prof. Dr. Merih Celasun, Prof. Dr. Ufuk Esin, Prof. Dr. Şevket Pamuk, Prof. Dr. Arda Denkel, Prof. Dr. İlhan Tekeli, Prof. Dr. Zafer Toprak, Prof. Dr. Mübeccel Kıray and Prof. Dr. Murat Sertel has selected two recipients for the award.

For his book titled “Sinan's Art and Selimiye”, written about Mimar Sinan (Architect Sinan); emphasizing the importance of Ottoman reality in his work and his personality, the importance of Islamic and Turkish Art for Europe of the 15th and 16th centuries; Mimar Sinan as an artist, his importance and his contributions, and the value of his architecture in the history of the world at, and the overall delicate and detailed interpretation; Prof. Dr. Doğan Kuban has been deemed worthy of the award.

And Prof. Dr. Emre Kongar, for his interdisciplinary work in social and humanities science after the Second World War, named “Turkey in the 21st Century"; a book about Turkey to understand today and to create a perspective to better understand the future, positioning Turkey in a light looking at domestic dynamics and democratization process by taking a critical angle with the increase in the role of the individual in this process, has been deemed worthy of the award.
